Edith Cowan University (ECU) is a public research university located in Western Australia, named in honor of Edith Cowan, the first woman to be elected to an Australian parliament. It is the second-largest university in the state, with over 30,000 students as of 2023. ECU was granted university status in 1991 after the amalgamation of several tertiary colleges, with roots tracing back to 1902 when Claremont Teachers College was established, marking the university as the descendant of Western Australia's first tertiary institution.
The university offers a broad range of programs across various fields, including healthcare, biomedicine, computer science, education, engineering, psychology, sports science, law, business, humanities, social sciences, aeronautics, and the performing arts. It also offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program and various majors in commerce, arts, and sciences. ECU maintains a partnership with the University of Portsmouth in the UK for dual-enrolled programs with integrated overseas study, as well as a collaboration with the University of Tasmania for naval engineering.
ECU is also known for its significant contribution to cybersecurity research, housing one of two Australian universities with federal Academic Centres of Cyber Security Excellence (ACCSE) and being the sole Australian member of the InterNational Cyber Security Center of Excellence (INCS-CoE).
The university operates three campuses: two in Perth (Joondalup and Mount Lawley) and one in Bunbury. The Joondalup campus is the largest and forms the heart of the Joondalup Learning Precinct. The Mount Lawley campus is home to the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and will relocate to Perth's central business district in 2025. The Bunbury campus is located in bushland next to the St John of God Bunbury Hospital, offering students access to a unique environment with native wildlife.
ECU is renowned for its high student satisfaction, consistently ranked the highest among public universities in Australia. It also boasts a long-standing reputation for excellence in teaching quality, particularly in the areas of nursing, teacher education, and performing arts.
