The Free University of Berlin (German: Freie Universität Berlin, often abbreviated as FU Berlin or simply FU) is a prestigious public research university located in Berlin, Germany. It was founded in 1948 in West Berlin, during the early Cold War period, with American support. The university was established as a continuation of the Friedrich Wilhelm University (later renamed Humboldt University), which was located in East Berlin and was subject to communist repression. The name "Free University" symbolized West Berlin's position within the democratic Western world, contrasting with communist-controlled East Berlin.
The university has played a significant role in research and education, particularly in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. In 2008, it collaborated with the Hertie School of Governance and the WZB Social Science Research Center Berlin to create the Berlin Graduate School for Transnational Studies, focusing on global studies and international cooperation.
FU Berlin has been recognized for its academic excellence and is a member of the German Universities Excellence Initiative, which recognizes top universities in Germany. In 2019, as part of the Excellence Strategy, FU Berlin was included in the second funding line of the Berlin University Alliance, highlighting its continued commitment to excellence in research and education.
Today, FU Berlin is known for its interdisciplinary approach, global perspective, and strong research output. It remains one of the leading universities in Germany and internationally.
