The Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU Munich) is a renowned public research university located in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. Founded in 1472 as the University of Ingolstadt by Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut, it is the sixth-oldest university in Germany. The university underwent several relocations, moving to Landshut in 1800 due to French threats, and ultimately to Munich in 1826 under King Ludwig I. In 1802, it was renamed Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität to honor both King Maximilian I and Duke Ludwig IX.
LMU Munich is the second-largest university in Germany by student enrollment, with nearly 53,000 students in the 2023/24 winter semester. Of these, a significant proportion are international students, making up approximately 28% of the student body. The university operates with a budget of around 797.4 million euros, with total funding increasing to approximately 2.18 billion euros when including the university's associated hospital.
The university has a distinguished legacy, with 44 Nobel laureates among its alumni and faculty, including groundbreaking scientists like Wilhelm Röntgen, Max Planck, Werner Heisenberg, and Otto Hahn. Notable individuals associated with LMU also include Pope Benedict XVI, philosophers such as Walter Benjamin and Ernst Cassirer, and figures in the arts like Bertolt Brecht and Richard Strauss. The university has also been linked to controversial figures like Josef Mengele, emphasizing its complex historical role.
In recognition of its excellence, LMU Munich has been awarded the title "University of Excellence" under the German Universities Excellence Initiative. It is also a member of prestigious academic organizations such as the U15 and the League of European Research Universities (LERU). The university continues to be a leading institution in research, education, and innovation.
