University of Western Australia (UWA)

The University of Western Australia (UWA) is a public research university located in Perth, Western Australia. Established in 1911 by an act of the Western Australian Parliament, UWA is the oldest university in the state and the sixth-oldest in Australia. It is recognized as one of Australia's "sandstone universities," a term used to describe the oldest and most prestigious universities in the country.

UWA is a member of the Group of Eight (Go8), which includes the eight most research-intensive and top-ranked universities in Australia. The university is also part of the Matariki Network of Universities, a global association of research-focused institutions.

Ranked among the top 100 universities globally, UWA is known for its high academic standards and extensive research contributions. It has a unique governance structure, with all graduates becoming lifelong members of the university through Convocation, granting them the right to attend annual meetings, vote for Senate members, and review legislative changes.

UWA's alumni include influential figures such as former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke, multiple justices of the High Court of Australia, and several prominent Western Australian premiers. The university is also notable for its Nobel Prize-winning researchers, Barry Marshall and Robin Warren, who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of the link between Helicobacter pylori bacteria and gastric ulcers. In 2018, UWA alumnus Akshay Venkatesh received the prestigious Fields Medal in Mathematics. Additionally, UWA has produced 106 Rhodes Scholars as of 2021.

The university's main campus is located in Crawley, a suburb of Perth, and it offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programs across various disciplines.
